This is a very long winded quiestion that i have been having trouble finding a way for asking as directly as possible. I think i've finally managed to make it as clear a explanation as possible. i imagine my fellow gamers will understand where i'm coming from.
Here i go:
I think this problem has around since long before NBN existed, i think i had this problem with ADSL and ADSL2. but i just discounted it to be a limited upload abilities of adsl.
Right now i had FTTP 100/40 Telstra NBN. i have been teaching myself to pass cisco exams so my home network is made up of enterprise level switches and routers in my home. (cause i can)
when i do a ookla speed test to the telstra brisbane server, i have gotten as low as 9ms ping, as high as 92mbps up and 33 mbps down. i download updates from steam or iso,s from microsoft or centos/fedors at 12.5MBps. so my internet is working perfectly.
trying to explain this from a gamers point of view the issue is that when myself and several of my mates around hte country try to game together we get horrible lag and unstable connections. this is soley when one of us host the game ourselves. if we all connect to the same game server we dont have this issue. this is across diferent consumer service providers and different hosting providers. this even happens with the guys that live either side of my house in the street.
when i explain it like this to telstra they try to blame my hardware for the poor performance of the game and wash their hand of it. but this simply cant be the case because when we all play together on my lan, the games run perfect. i even throw a cable across the fence to my neighbours and there is no problem all the game run perfectly fine, even if there is several people at my place and at my neighbours place.
it cant be argued that its different providers because one neighbour is iinet and the other is also telstra, all 3 of us also have fttp nbn. my ping to brisbane of 9ms became a ping of atleast 90ms as high as 150ms that i have seen it, to the guy that lives next door me me. and we are clearly experiancing major packet loss. this is why i want to know whats going on and why its acceptable.
i have tried taking this up with regular tech support, telstra store, telstra premium and the complaints department and even the few people i have spoken to who believe me that there is an issue tell me there is nothing they can do about it. i have even had 2 people admit to me that australian internet is optimised for downlaods only not uploads.
the main reason i have descided to chase this up for is that i want to start an online family business and not pay third parties for online hosting services.
if the answer is simply that i need to change to a business acount my problem will be fix then so be it. but i have one support guy tell me it wont make a difference and the rest have said they dont know and they couldn't find someone who could give them an answer.
thanks for reading my rant, i'm not expecting there will be an answer but i'm going to start calling around other isps for their opinions because telstras phone support is attrocious.
