Hi
About 10 days ago we were switched over to the NBN. We have established that both the Internet and VOIP phone work very well using the Gateway Max. We are getting 24.3 Mb/sec on a 25 Mb/sec plan. Pretty good really. The node I believe is only 100m away from our house so we have minimal copper.
To their credit, I have found the support people to be kind and patient.
We have had the FRitzbox 7390 for a few years on ADSL2 and really like its parental controls and other features.
When we signed up I asked if The Fritzbox would work and was assured that it would with only a few changes to the account settings.
An instruction was duly printed out for me (from another ISP!). This instruction showed how to get the fritzbox working for the Internet and how to setup the VOIP phone. I have done this on my daughters setup using another Fritzbox and ADSL2.
I then fired up my Fritzbox and nothing worked until I read that you tick "no password" in the account settings and the Internet connected without further hitches.
The real fun started when I tried to get the VOIP phone working. I checked all the connections and yes the phone and modem are connected as per instructions.
I am missing two bits of information that no-one yet is able to provide. I need to supply the "Registrar (SIP server info) and a password.
The SIP server info is unique to Telstra. I could not work it out from looking at the Gateway Max modem. The password does not seem to be the same as my Telstra ID unless I am mistaken.
Fritbox (AVM Australia) stated that we would have to get this info from Telstra/NBN as they did not know it. They do know it for the other ISP (above) so we know for certain that you can use this other ISP and connect the FRitzbox to the Internet as well as the VOIP phone.
Can anyone please advise here? I have called Telstra and NBN and have been greeted with the usual "just use our Gateway Max". I must have spent at least half a day on the VOIP issue. I've called all of the correct tech support people and no one has any clue about this.
To be honest, I think that this is a reasonably big issue as it means you can't use your own favourite modem and yet the "other ISP" has no trouble. I think that this should be made publically available.
The last word from the tech support people was that I should call Telstra Platinum. That is a subscription service with $20 per month charges that I may only use once. I'm not convinced that they will be able to help me either!
There is a hefty cancellation fee as well.
