Can Uni-V port and Gateway VoIP be used simultaneously on NBN service?

We are registered for Priority Assistance and our NBN connection is FTTP. We have just had our NBN Connection Box and Battery Back-Up installed by the NBN tech. The Telstra tech will carry out a Professional install shortly.

As I understand it our fixed line phone service will be connected to Uni-V port on the NBN Connection Box so as to provide a phone service in the event of a power cut (assuming a corded legacy phone is used). I also understand that there is a VoIP phone port on the supplied Telstra "gateway" modem/wi-fi unit.

My question is can both phone ports be used simultaneously? The reason I ask is for simplicity of cabling. If both ports can be used simultaneously then we would connect a legacy wired handset to the Uni-V port and a wireless base station with 3 handsets to the gateway phone port thus avoiding the need for any new cabling.

If only the Uni-V port can be used then it will be necessary to provide additional cabling to provide the two outlets required - I am assuming that an RJ11 splitter would be frowned upon!

I would just like to know the possibilities so that I can prepare a little in advance of the Tech install

I would appreciate any comments, advice etc

Thanks
