NBN service stability = modem issue?

Hi All,

After much angst, I've been "connected" to the NBN through Telstra for a few months.  I was sent a Telstra F@st 5355 as a part of the setup and when it works, it's fine.

Right now, I lose my NBN connection every 72 hrs, almost to a schedule.  When my connection drops out, its usually in active use, and I will suddenly lose internet.  The connection light on the modem will go white or red, and if I power cycle the modem, it usually comes back.

It is rare that I can't restore the connection this manner, which makes me think its probably a modem issue rather than at the NBN end.

If I'm away when the connection drops, I'll either come home to the Wifi broadcasting as the original telstra SSID, or even sometimes the factory F@ST_5355 SSID used on the modem.

I spent more than an hour going through every reset cycle with an NBN agent before, so given it takes me around 15 minutes to deal with every outage it never seems like a good idea to try to call again.  When the restart resulted in a literal factory reset last time the agent was stumped.  I guessed may way through a return to service and havent revisited calling.

I've reviewed the log on the device but I dont see anything particular alarming, but maybe I'm not looking for the right stuff.

Soooo

Is there anything else I should be looking at for diagnostics?  Alternatively, is there another modem I could get to use with the NBN to try to actually get a stable service?

So far this whole thing is pretty underwhelming.
