How do I set up my Netgear D7800 with the NBN FTTN

I have a Netgear Nighthawk D7800 and will be getting connected to the NBN shortly.

I don't want to use the Telstra Gateway Max and I also use my phone  the Siemens Gigaset that needs to be connected as well.

Any ideas or help how to set it up?

Expected NBN speeds (FTTN/B)

I am under the impression that NBN will guarantee 70% of your plan speed with Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) but is there any guarantee on speeds for Fibre to the Node/Building (FTTN/B)? And yes i know that there is limitations similar if not worse than ADSL ie, distance from node/quality of copper etc.

Wireless Plan Speeds

Hi All,

Just wanted to ask why is there no plan 50MB down for Fixed Wireless NBN ?

I am sure a while ago there was a option for this and now the best you can get is 25 MB.

Thanks

Given telstra cable is a very old, slow, and over-priced service, are we stuck with it with the new LNP MTM NBN if we live in an area with telstra cable?

Using Apple AirPort Time Capsule Wi-Fi with Telstra Technicolour Gateway on NBN

I have had difficulties when changing over from ADSL to Australian NBN using the same Technicolour Gateway.  We required a technician to come and solve the problem after many hours of troubleshooting.  I am including the process below that solved the issue for us but am keen to hear if there were any simpler methods of resolution for people in the future.

These instructions are for setting up a Telstra Technicolour Gateway TG797nV3 on the Australian NBN with an Apple Time Capsule to achieve the following:

* Local Wi-Fi network created by the Time Capsule (allows Time machine backups to Time Capsule, Apple file sharing, etc)

* Internet access on the Time Capsule Wi-Fi network

* Working phone connection on the NBN through the Technicolour Gateway

These instructions assume that you have already established a Wi-Fi network created by your Time Capsule - https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT201510

These instructions are particularly useful if you had bridged your AirPort Time Capsule to a Telstra Technicolour gateway while connected to Australian ADSL.

Instructions:

  1. Disconnect all cords (except power cords) from Technicolour Gateway and Time Capsule.
  2. Plug NBN ethernet cable into WAN slot on Technicolour Gateway.
  3. Connect phone cord into phone base station and Voice slot on Technicolour Gateway
  4. Reset Technicolour Gateway (hold reset button on back for 10secs)
  5. Plug ethernet cable into LAN slot on Technicolour Gateway and WAN slot on Time Capsule.
  6. Open AirPort Utility on computer and edit Time Capsule settings:

In ‘Network’ tab, change ‘Router Mode’ setting to ‘Off (Bridge Mode)’.

In ‘Internet’ tab, change ‘Connect Using’ setting to ‘DHCP’. Check that router address is 10.0.0.138.  (If it does not have this address click renew DHCP lease button.)

‘Base Station’ tab, ‘Wireless’ tab and ‘Disks’ tab settings all stay the same.

Save the settings by clicking ‘Update’.

  1. If you had DHCP reservations for specific devices set up on your Time Capsule Network, you will need to enter these into the ‘Static Leases’ section within the ‘Local Network’ settings on the Technicolour Gateway (see steps 8, 9 and 11 to access ‘Local Network’ settings).

The light on the Time Capsule should now be green (and the Time Capsule and Internet indicator buttons in AirPort Utility should be green) and the Ethernet, Wireless, Voice, WAN, Internet and ECO lights on the Technicolour Gateway should all be green (some may be flashing). It may up to 10 minues after the Technicolour Gateway restarts in Step 4 for the Voice light to become solid green. You should hear a dialtone in the phone when the Voice light is green.

Overall, these instructions make the Technicolour Gateway the router and DHCP server (distributes IP addresses) and bridge the Time Capsule so it creates a Wi-Fi network and passes on the internet connection and IP addresses assigned by the Technicolour Gateway.

Once the Time Capsule restarts after step 6, you should have an internet connection through your Time Capsule’s Wi-Fi network. If not, here are some instructions that might help with troubleshooting:

  1. Go to an internet browser (Safari/Firefox/other) and type ‘10.0.0.138’ into the address bar. This will open the Technicolour Gateway settings.
  2. Click on ‘Advanced Settings’
  3. Click on the ‘Internet Access’ option and confirm that the connection mode is ‘DHCP routed mode’. All the default settings should be used. Close this window.
  4. Click on the ‘Local Network’ option and confirm that the DHCP server box is ticked and the following settings should be present:

            Network address:      10.0.0.0

DHCP Start Address  10.0.0.1

            DHCP End Address   10.0.0.137

Netgear V2610 Backup Huawei e8372 not working

My sister is opening a new retail shop in Cairns and my girlfriend and I have used our points to come up from Sydney over this long weekend and help her get setup.
My history is in technical support and my aim was to get wifi, sonos, media player etc all working. Easy IF you have a working internet connection!
My sister has been waiting for Telstra to get the fibre NBN working - it was connected about 6 weeks ago and the LEDs on the NBN box indicate a working connection.
WAN is connected, has an IP address (101.178.253.69), DNS, DHCP server etc. I can do domain name lookups but we have no interpipes.

Sooooo, I thought that I’d get the ‘backup modem” connection working. That way I could get the Sonos, media player, printer and point of sale system all working on the final wireless network and so when the fibre account issue is sorted, everything will just continue to work.
Ha. The best laid plans of mice and men go oft awry.

According to the (rather thin) manual, the V7610 router supports a Telstra 4Gx e8372 (Huawei USB dingle) as backup.
So I grabbed a working SIM that the Telstra technician left with us (it was working in a 4GX MF910) and put it in a brand new Telstra e8372.
I first tested on my laptop - all good! Plugged it into router and it just won’t work (see status data below).
I reset the router, reran the ‘wizard’. Tried selecting “other Telstra SIM” for mobile backup setup, tried “DOT” setting.
Tried different sequences, engaged vulcan **bleep** grip  - all to no avail.
Tried with a new activated prepaid SIM in a the e8372. Tried various APNs and dialling strings but the modem can not even get the IMEI of the Huawei ‘dingle’.
Which seems to imply that this firmware does not a supported USB device (sad face).
Tried the MF910 direct with USB cable - V7610 modem actually recognised the IMEI but still no connection.
Note that the Huawei dingle always works when used on a PC (MacBook Pro).

This is getting very tedious. Any help, advice greatly appreciated!

Slow NBN speeds

Hi,

I recently got NBN and for the last week I've had speeds of a maximum 500 kb/s. Here are my current speed tests:

Download Speed: 3368 kbps (421 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 4409 kbps (551.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 37 ms
Jitter: 21 ms
Packet Loss: -1%
02/10/2016, 8:37:35 pm

I've called support several times and yet they seem to find nothing wrong with my current speeds and that it will be fixed by saturday... My adsl 2+ was faster on it's slow days than this.

Anyone have any ideas? Current speed test is with only 2 people using the internet and WiFi being used.

Regards,

Moh

Constant NBN FTTN dropouts

Is anyone having constant dropouts with their FTTN NBN connection?  We are experiencing regular (10-30mins) dropouts all day  for the past 10 weeks.  Dropouts occur even when we are away from the house, after 3 modems and 9 technician visits.  The technician visits (NBN and Telstra) result in no further escalation on the part of Telstra or NBN.  We simply go in circles with telephone staff trying to diagnose the problem, sending the technician and then telling us we are fixed.  Yet, the system does not allow us to get to a manager level to get the problem looked at by a more experienced person.

Connecting handset wirelessly to my gateway modem

Hi Guys

Just looking for detail on how to connect my phone to my Telstra NBN service wirelessly. I can connect cordless phones to the modem with a cord easily enough but the modem is in the most inconvenient place for a handset base... so ideally I would like to connect wirelessly so I can plug my handset base in wherever I like in the house.

Is the Telstra 13150 Retro Cordless Phone which is DECT compatible able to connect wirelessly?

Several handsets on NBN

Next week we are due to be connected to the NBN. The Gateway box has already arrived although I might prefer to continue using my Fritz!box router, which I'm told should be possible.

I would like to know a couple of things:

  1. can telephone handsets be connected to both green ports to operate in parallel?
  2. can I connect our cordless phone base station to one of the ports and will the other cordless phone (which normally sits on a charger only) continue to work?
  3. as the internal house telephone wiring has 4 conductors (we used to have a separate fax line), and I am assuming the old landline pair of conductors will now carry the NBN to the router, can I connect a green Gateway port to the other pair of conductors and expect that other phones in the home connected to this pair of wires work?
  4. As I have a UPS to keep my computer going in the event of a power failure, if I power the Gateway from this UPS will it also keep my phone service working in the event of a power outage?

I should clarify that we're getting the NBN over copper for the last 250 meters (so fibre to the node); and the Gateway that's turned up is the TG799vac.

Looking forward to advice

Foxtel On Demand drop outs after NBN connection and Slow download speeds

Hi, I note that there have been similar posts to this one, albeit some time ago.

I recently had my ADSL swapped to NBN. Now my Foxtel On Demand rarely works. I have had some success by removing power from the Foxtel unit (IQ2) but now it wont work at all.

My download speed is around 1.8mbps in the evening. In the morning it (when it seems most people are in bed) I get around the 25mbps as per advertising. I assume that FTTN means that there could be many homes connected to 'the' node. ADSL was definitely quicker!

Q1. Does anyone have a recent solution to the Foxtel issue?

Q2. Can someone confirm that my download speeds are not likey to increase due to 'node' sharing? In which case will an increase in the package speed (move from 'fast' to 'faster') even help???
